Let Not This Country Be Without You
If you have trouble understanding Orion Karl Daley’s slogan, he offers a translation: “Leave no American behind!” Daly, of New York, has the coolest first name of all the Project White House candidates and has been planning his presidential run since January 2005. His principles: Transparent and accountable government, the dignity of human rights, balanced trade, economic solvency and workable foreign policy. Daly’s book, The New Deal, lays out “real solutions for improving the health, safety and welfare of America.”
“Keeping in mind that the State of the Union Speech in the Constitution is the fundamental job description for the President of the United States, I authored the Promise, for Election 2008. In 2004, I wrote it in wanting to set a standard, and have it become known as to what any candidate must match or exceed in providing this country a fair deal that is backed by true commitment in his or her leadership when being entrusted and held accountable for, by our nations people, and with respect to the world around us. For me, in this manner, let the best in leadership win the regard of the people in 2008.”
I am no Icon, and like every body else, I pay and owe taxes. I wanted to share the following so you know more about me. I see true leadership as in being a straight shooter, and Transparency is key to this. You have to be who you say you are, in order for others who have entrusted you to believe in what you say.
In the following, I would like to share some background. Its not intended as some resume, but to help explain where I am coming from , so it will be easier to understand where I want us to go.
I founded Orion Computer Systems in late 1985. I started my career as a self taught Electrical Engineer, which evolved into a management consulting practice at Price Waterhouse before forming OCSI ( Orion Computer Systems, Inc. ) as a bid based systems integration consulting practice; and now currently as a per diem contractor. Since its inception, I have managed successfully many industry based projects, teams and resources for clients.
I had built somewhat of a successful foundation , best practices , and strategic vision for OCSI by being able to communicate in an opaque and transparent manner with all management and technical levels; authoring Strategic Systems Planning Methodologies, and by providing excellence in service level that clients can depend on.
When at Price Waterhouse, I functioned as a Manager in building their telecommunications practice development while managing many critical EDP audit teams. The client base included the U.S Treasury Department, Consolidated Edison and other PW clients in the financial, health, insurance, and commercial industries.
Before PW, I was an ad hoc manager of messaging Switching technology at ITT WorldComm, and earlier in career authored the original Floating Point at Bell Telephone Labratories for the first version of Western Electric System 7 Unix as a software engineer.
Before invited to Bell Telephone Laboratories, at Raytheon Data Systems I developed microprocessor based airline reservation systems, and later became a Senior Engineer at Burroughs Corporation.
Prior to becoming an EE about 30 years ago, undergrad work was pre-med/psychology. Also too early in life had a first marriage at 19 which caused some bumps and hiccups in what could have been a well laid plan in medicine to become a healer. She was a little older, and understandably so, wanted a salesman and not a student. We parted eventually. At WVU, med school was out of the question dollars wise, but was offered an in state tuition if first abstaining from attending school for a year to earn residency. In the beginning of that year, I got quite interested in what was called then Microprocessors, and also needed a way to make a living. 6 months later after two inteviews, I was offered a career start as an EE at both Raytheon and Burroughs. Peer acceptance took some time when being self taught, but it is only a matter of delivery that earns mutual respect.
In the early 90’s, as OCSI, eventually becoming a per diem contractor also presented challenges while raising my family. In one instance, things can look like they are finally about to smooth out, and then, with out notice, you are exiting a client due to cuts. This is regardless of how good you are as its a fact of business. Regardless, you have your love ones to take care of, and when out of work, most of the time is invested in looking for work and how to honor legacy bills.
There were a few good years at UBS. I was able to pay the rent on time, and we were able to eat something else besides maccaroni. Since the early 90’s, I had studied finance and institutional banking. Later at UBS, I got to know the banking industry even better, and as well authored a plan between Swiss Banks and Holocaust families and survivors; for me it made since to have a strategic Win/Win for both to heal old wounds. Strategically, we have to have economic solutions for world peace, but which have to first be built on mutual respect. This can only come from respecting others as we do ourselves.
The Dot Com Boom occurred right when UBS downsized much of its NYC operations in 98. I created a company called ‘The Trading Systems Network, Inc.’ It was a vision for a Fidessa:Bloomberg like hybrid. With little funds, it too had its bumps as a startup, but I was honored in the trust afforded by my angel investors, that clients and friends contributed computers, and also by the NYSE, NADASQ, and AMEX for my accountabilty. The Exchanges allowed me to distribute real time market quotations on the internet from my home. One angel in particular, an Iranian Jew who with his family narrowly escaped as refugees in the 70s’s from Iran, had put a significant part of his life savings into the business. We have been friends now for over the past 10 years. Back in 2000, we had finally gotten the recognition of an investment banking firm. It was located in the WTC. We had started to see my proof of vision about to go places in August 2001 and things looked like they were going to improve, and finally hire some friends with great talent; and setup an office of about 40 people on Broad Street. We never got there of course, as like for all, 911 had changed everything.
I had to keep my family going afterwards. There was no real work as a contractor as everything was instead being offshored. Even my wife Carolyn had been laid off by her employer, Arthur Andersen a month before the Enron investigation. As the WTC was like the trees in our front yard just up the street on 7th ave in NYC, our 3 kids were our most concern. I wanted to minimize the ripple effect on our kids and created a family continuity project to keep us busy. We have plenty of computers at home, so we could build anything we wanted for the Internet. It might make money, and might not, but while out of work, I needed to keep busy, and they learned basic skill sets. This cut through the shock that could of hit them as our neighborhood was generally taped off, loaded with rescue vechicles and a lot sirens. We built ModelsUnlimited.net which was in applying some Wall Street business concepts in another industry. Our kids became very proficient in graphic art work. Today they have these skills, if needed to fall back on them another day.
It was a long 3 years before election 2004, and we had stayed real tight together. Our oldest daughter did get side-winded when I could not have her return to college back then. Fortunately today, our two daughters are currently in college, and we are looking forward to our son going this fall.
I waited patiently for election 2004, and put desperate faiths in the leadership of the Dems, but regardless of any election day issues, their leadership looked like milk toast; and voter belief was expected like blind faith instead of ‘Trust but Verify’. Only religions can ask this of you, but not your nation’s current nor future leadership. I figured that the Dems were hopefully less ignorant and less contrived than the current leadership. But for the Dems, I saw no real solutions, nor strategic path, and no horizon. The only message that resonated from them was some lip service about how life was unfair, and help get them into the Whitehouse. I had an issue with this as in knowing that if we put self serving agendas aside, workable solutions for this nation abound.
I am not sure what ‘fair’ really means these past 6 years by the current administration, or by the 2004 Democrat candidates, but do know very clearly what the ‘health, safety, and welfare’ of my family means to me. And in a similar manner as the love I have for my family, I do know very clearly that this also applies to our nation as a people. In fact when watching the WTC Towers come down, I wanted to sign up for the local militia, as figuring that an invasion was under way in our neighborhood. Frankly I was stunned back then as not understanding how Gulliani could allow an open Halloween parade a month after 911. As usual, a million people attend; and for that matter this occurs just up the block. Then the smoke simply had not settled, and they were talking about dirty bombs on every other day except for Halloween. In the mean time, Gulliani was billed as some sort of a hero for drawing the ground zero assitance cut off point about 100 feet south of our apartment?
In 2004, in press releases, I announced the Balanced Party based on 5 very clear principles that our nation as a people, and its government to serve them needs for our strategic future. As I want a future for my family, this goes hand in hand with the future of our nation. Expectedly, I would want to eventually see leaders include in their vocabulary the word ‘Principle’, and ‘Transparent and Accountable Government, The Dignity of Human Rights, Balanced Trade, Economic Solvency, and to Conduct workable Foreign Policy’. But to use them, they must be more than sound bites for self serving agendas.
Keeping in mind that the State of the Union Speech in the Constitution is the fundamental job description for the President of the United States, I authored the Promise, for Election 2008. In 2004, I wrote it in wanting to set a standard, and have it become known as to what any candidate must match or exceed in providing this country a fair deal that is backed by true commitment in his or her leadership when being entrusted and held accountable for, by our nations people, and with respect to the world around us. For me, in this manner, let the best in leadership win the regard of the people in 2008.
